(ANSAmed) - CAIRO, APRIL 18 - A total forty mummified crocodiles will be exhibited for the first time in a museum dedicated to them, which will open doors next week in Aswan, in Upper Egypt. The news was announced today by Secretary General of the Egyptian Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass. Settled in front of the temple of Kom Ombo, the museum will host 40 specimens of various sizes: from the smallest, 1.5 metres long, to the real giants of almost five metres of length. The crocodiles, which used to be mummified after their death, were worshipped by the ancient Egyptians who associated them with the worship of God Sobek, represented as a man with a crocodile head. Sobek, the God of water, fertility and irrigation of fields gained a national deity during the XII dynasty. According to the ancient Egyptians, the presence of crocodiles along the river Nile was a presage for a rich crop. Hawass announced that the museum of crocodiles will officially be enrolled in the list of the Egyptian archaeological sites. (ANSAmed).
